Living Books

Living Books Updated Fall 2019

What is Beyond the Cover?

Beyond the Cover is a library of books – except the books are people.  A reader can check out these Living Books and have a conversation with them for 20 minutes.  The conversation will focus on whatever the Living Book shares as part of their story.
A BEYOND THE COVER event is centered around a specific theme, such as: Disabilities Awareness (current theme), future themes might be Equity and Diversity, Careers and Majors, the possibilities are endless.

Living Books are expected to present themselves in an authentic way through a positive exchange. Books and readers are asked to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

How Does It Work?

On the day of the event, there will be a browsing area for all of the Living Books. In order to check-out a Living Book, the reader will check-out the Living Book at the Research Help/Reference Desk. The policies are as follows:

  • Living Books can be checked out for 20 minutes.
  • Living Books are renewable for another 20 minutes, as long as there are no holds on the book.
  • You may place a hold on a Living Book, if it is checked out.
  •  Dual-person checkouts are available for some Living Books, as noted in the browsing area.
  •  Living Books are for use in the library only.
  • There will be four different book readings. Readers will choose the group/time they want to be a part of.  You may end this time early. A Living Book may also end the conversation early as well.
