Textbook Reserves FAQ

Does the library have all the textbooks on reserve?

Through a Student Equity grant and faculty donations both libraries strive to keep a copy of each required textbook on reserve. If you are unable to locate your textbook please contact the MVC Library Reference Desk at 951-639-5450 or the SJC Library Reference Desk at 951-487-3452.

How do I find out if my textbook is available on reserve?

  1. If you are in the library, you can scan the open reserve shelves for your book. The books are arranged by subject and then by course number (e.g. English 98, 101). 
  2. You can also search for reserves online. On the library homepage, click on the "Reserve/Textbook" tab in the searchbox. You can then search using any of the following keywords:campus (MVC or SJC), course subject abbreviation (see below), course number, your teacher's name or the title of the book. Here are some sample searches: 
  • MVC ENGL 101 (Campus, subject and course number)
  • Wakim 101 (teacher and course number)
  • In Mixed Company: Communicating in Small Groups and Teams (Title).

Where are the textbook reserves located?

In the Menifee library, the majority of the textbooks can be found in the textbook shelves near the reference desk (see below) in the library (location in the catalog: MVC Textbook Stacks). These books are on open shelves and are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. 
A smaller collection of material can be found behind the circulation desk. This material typically consists of lab manuals, workbooks, DVDs, videos, and articles. You can identify these items in the catalog by the location MVC Circulation Desk.

In the San Jacinto library, the textbooks can be found in the circulating book stacks. These books are on open shelves and are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.Simply follow the signs (see below) to find the collection (location in the catalog:SJC Textbook Stacks).  Articles, a few books, CDs, DVDs and maps can be found behind the circulation desk.  These items can be identified in the catalog by the location SJC Reserve Desk.


Can I check a reserve textbook out of the library?

No. Reserve textbooks are designated for in-library use only. You can read them in the library or make copies of pages at the copy machine (.10 a page).     


How long can I use the textbook?

There is a 2-hour time limit.
